The vineyards at Bodegas Murua

AN IDYLLIC LANDSCAPE IN RIOJA ALAVESA

When we gaze upon the land in Rioja Alavesa, we discover an idyllic spot dominated by intense greens. The vineyards in this winemaking land belong to the designation of origin DOCa Rioja.

Bodegas Murua owns 51 plots of estate vineyards which grow several grape varietals. The estate features 80 hectares in the Rioja Alavesa region, dotted around the areas of Elciego, Laguardia, Villabuena de Álava, Leza, Lanciego and Navaridas. Amongst the vineyards in this beautiful land, we can find many places of cultural interest such as Bronze Age sites, megalithic monuments and medieval villages, which further enhance the internationally renowned wine tourism experience offered in La Rioja, one of the most important designations of origin in Spain.

If we take a closer look at the area surrounding the Murua winery, we can see that the estate is divided into 8 plots planted with vineyards growing different varietals. In order to achieve the best results in each type of grape and reach the level of excellence inherent to Bodegas Murua, the orientation and sun exposure of the clusters and the terroir are carefully studied.

BODEGAS MURUA ESTATE VINEYARDS

Murua’s vineyards are almost one hundred years old and the star varietal is the tempranillo grape which delights us with extraordinary wines such as M de Murua, 100% tempranillo, and Murua Reserva, Bodegas Murua’s flagship wine. Our vineyards also grow native white varietals such as viura, white grenache and malvasía, which give us our magnificent white wine, Murua Blanco Fermentado en Barrica We also grow other native red varietals such as graciano, mazuelo and grenache with which our oenologist rounds off Bodegas Murua’s wines and awards them the unique nature of the Rioja Alavesa, amongst which we can find VS Murua and Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva, a true gem that is only made with extraordinary vintages.

A UNIQUE TERROIR AT THE FOOT OF THE TOLOÑO MOUNTAIN RANGE

When we smell, touch and feel the terrains that nourish our vineyards, we find that they contain clayey-calcareous soils. We also feel a breeze and a mild temperature, typical to the Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influences that is enjoyed in this area at 450 metres above sea level.

All of these factors form a unique terroir that produces traditional, elegant wines. These soils offer a pure, sincere raw material with which we strive to make exceptional wines.
